The 2016 PBA Re-Draft

Gilas Pilipinas is off to Chinese Taipei for the Jones Cup. The roster packs a mean punch as Kiefer Ravena, Bobby Ray Parks, Christian Standhardinger, Raymar Jose, Kobe Paras, and import Mike Myers join current Gilas pool members Mac Belo, Matthew Wright, RR Pogoy, Kevin Ferrer, Ed Daquioag, Carl Bryan Cruz, Mike Tolomia, Von Pessumal, Fonso Gotladera, and Almond Vosotros.

This inspired me to make an article. I am going to re-do the entire 2016 PBA Draft and make the pieces fit as how it needs to.

Now first things first, I am going to nix the special round. Remember when Chito Narvasa read the pre-determined choices alphabetically and the first name they called was Alaska’s Carl Bryan Cruz? The pop from the crowd isn’t as loud as when Narvasa called the name of Blackwater draftee Mac Belo. The pop Cruz drew was almost identical to that of Ael Banal when he was named the top numbered pick. I thought the special round is dumb… and shady at best.

As far as the first round draft order goes, I am going to follow the order of the regular draft. Blackwater will draft first followed by Phoenix, Ginebra, Mahindra, Star, San Miguel, Meralco, NLEX, Rain or Shine, Alaska, GlobalPort, and TNT. As per the 2016 proceedings, The Batang Pier selected their first regular pick at the start of the third round while TNT got their draft start late in the fourth round. The second round will have the same order as that of the 2016 PBA Draft. For this do-ever, I will look at the positions the teams filled as well as the best players available in the draft at that time as well as in the current league landscape.

1 BLA F Mac Belo Mac Belo
2 PHX G Matthew Wright Matthew Wright
3 GIN F Kevin Ferrer Kevin Ferrer
4 MAH C Russel Escoto Arnold Van Opstal
5 STA G Jio Jalalon Jio Jalalon
6 SMB C Arnold Van Opstal Russel Escoto
7 MER G Ed Daquioag Roger Pogoy
8 NLE C Fonso Gotladera Carl Bryan Cruz
9 ROS G Mike Tolomia Ed Daquioag
10 ALA F Carl Bryan Cruz Mike Tolomia
11 GLO G Von Pessumal Von Pessumal
12 TNT F Roger Pogoy Fonso Gotladera

I will still select Mac Belo for Blackwater, Matthew Wright for Phoenix, and Kevin Ferrer for Ginebra. These guys deserve their spots. In terms of name recognition and current capabilities, they certainly made an impression as future superstars. However, I believe Mahindra needed a player with a Belo-like mindset and I don’t think Russel Escoto fits the description. Prior to joining the Beermen, Arnold Van Opstal had hopes of becoming the next big PBA superstar and he could have had that rise if he was selected by the Floodbusters. I would rather see Escoto play backup in a title contender than play in a so-so squad. Star will still have Jio Jalalon but San Miguel will get Russel Escoto. As mentioned earlier, Escoto will cherish the bench role – learning the game through June Mar Fajardo, Yancy de Ocampo, Jay-R Reyes, and fellow FEU alum Arwind Santos. Meralco would then recruit Roger Pogoy. I know Pogoy is big time find but back then, he is more of a Mac Belo supplement than a Mac Belo Rookie of the Year rival. Yeng Guiao would then enjoy the gameplay of scrappy Carl Bryan Cruz as a NLEX Road Warrior because after a hot start in Alaska, Cruz’s minutes regressed. Ed Daquioag would then energize the bench of Rain or Shine with Mike Tolomia giving the Alaska Aces an extra kick to their offense. Von Pessumal will still head to GlobalPort because even with his surge he’ll have a hard time overtaking the other wingmen and TNT will end up with big man Fonso Gotladera… because I don’t really get why they had Pogoy in the first place.

13 BLA G Ael Banal Jonathan Grey
14 PHX G Gelo Alolino Reden Celda
15 GIN F Jammer Jamito Chris Javier
16 MAH F Joseph Eriobu Gelo Alolino
17 STA F Chris Javier Joseph Eriobu
18 SMB G Rashawn McCarthy Rashawn McCarthy
19 MER G Jonathan Grey Ael Banal
20 NLE G Reden Celda Jammer Jamito
21 ROS ** PASS ** Alfrancis Tamsi
22 GIN C Jericho de Guzman Jericho de Guzman
23 ALA ** PASS ** Levi Hernandez
24 PHX F Jeff Javillonar Jeff Javillonar

As far as the regular draft went, Jonathan Grey should have been the Blackwater pick. No offense to all Ael Banal fans but boy did his rookie season bombed. As for Grey, he had flashes of brilliance at the start of the season and he’ll possibly gain the minutes vacated of Anthony Semerad and Pessumal. Phoenix had the right intention of selecting Gelo Alolino but as far as top point guards go, Reden Celda has emerged into a good player. Ginebra would then get Chris Javier instead of Jammer Jamito because it’s not like his act is wowing people. At least Javier is a believable choice at that time and still has the name recognition until today. And admit it, you were shocked when the Gins selected Jammer. Alolino would then move two spots down as he’ll probably have the numbers Celda has at the moment. Joseph Eriobu would then replace Javier as the Star pick. San Miguel will still select Rashawn McCarthy as a potential wingman project with Banal getting the spot Grey had in the draft. Yeng Guiao would then claim the services of Jamito. Unlike as a Gin, Guiao would happily transform Jamito into a Larry Rodriguez clone… and that’s a good thing. Rain or Shine wouldn’t pass on their pick (or at least in this re-draft) so they can select Alfrancis Tamsi. The Elasto Painters had the likes of undrafted player Billy Ray Robles as well as D-League vet Dexter Maiquez in their lineup so they have the need to fill their spots with draft picks. Ginebra will still get Jericho de Guzman and Phoenix will still claim Jeff Javillonar but if Alaska didn’t pass on their pick, they could insert a talented shooter like Levi Hernandez in their squad.

But perhaps Hernandez is better off outside the second round. Whoever thought that a sixth rounder could steal a spot potentially for Tim Habelito and Mikee Reyes?

As far as the other rookies go, I can still see Billy Ray Robles beyond the second round alongside Tristan Perez and Jessie Saitanan.

So that’s my list. Did I do well? Give me a heads up below!
